post modern

These are works by the American artist Terry Redlin.  I am not sure how many of you have heard of Redlin, but he is from South Dakota and painted from 1977-2007.  These works are from his collection America the Beautiful.  The top work is titled Above the fruited plain and the other is titled America! America!.  They were both painted in 1990 for a much larger collection consisting of 8 works total.  Redlin is my favorite modern artist so I had to do some of his works.  I own several and have been to his museum in South Dakota several times.  The works he painted here are typical of what he usually paints.  He generally paints of landscapes of his home state of South Dakota.  His use of color on both highlight the time of day being suggested  on the bottom the sun shining on the flag draws your attention to it.

Charging Bull by Arturo Di Modica placed outside the New York Stock exchange as a protest for the collapse of the markets from 1987.  It is made of bronze and put in a very public place for all to see with the symbolizes be a bull market.

Fearless girl by Kristen Visbal.  It was originally placed in 2017 and was facing down the Bull sculpted by Modica.  Complaints by Modica lead to moving the Girl statue across the streets.  The symbolism of the little girl being fearless of a big bull is said to show that women have power to.  It was put in a very public place as to draw attention to what it is meaning is.

This is work by Roger Ing.  The names of these works bottom Lady from the book 1993 and untitled(Scream) 1988-1990.  These are common type works from the postmodern era.  The use of the bright colors and short brush strokes are almost a way for the artist to either protest or putting a modern spin on a classic.  I am not a fan of these types of works I think my kids could do something similar to this.

  1. The Charging Bull is a great example of what art challenging politics can look like. This controversial art has created a lot of tourist attraction and photographs in New York City. It is interesting that you chose to discuss both the Fearless Girl and the Charging Bull as the Fearless Girl statue faced the bull. The city claims this was great for tourist attraction – however it is an interesting choice as to what each statue represents. It can be looked at in one of two ways metaphorically; the decline of the stock market exchange can be saved by the equality of women in the workforce, or the decline of capitalism is on its last legs to target every demographic it can take down with the failure of the stock market exchange. Thirdly, it can suggest that the stock market will charge at its own people to ensure the survival of capitalism. I feel there are many ways to interpret this new art placement as the city has created a unique placement for tourist revenue. This is certainly something to think about for later! As someone who grew up in New York City, it was always a hassle moving around The Charging Bull to get to work when there were huge crowds taking pictures!

  2. Hi Rhett,
I liked the art you shared in your blog. You had quite a variety of art pieces. I like the painting “Above the Fruited Plains” by Terry Redlin, as it is, for the most part, a peaceful painting. It is a painting of a few people on a horse-pulled wagon, with the beautiful blue and orange sky as well as the nice clear stream. I like how Terry Redlin used horizontal lines for the buildings in his painting to convey distance and calmness. These lines are used to show that most of the buildings are set back into the distance and that it is a nice calm day in the painting.
I liked the other painting that was completed by Terry Redlin, “America! America!”. I like this painting since it is a depiction of several kids who are raising the American flag on a nice, peaceful day, with the sun rising for the day. I think Redlin was able to make his painting better by using different types of lines. I like that the bridge was made up of a couple of horizontal lines to portray distance in the painting, where the hills are set back into the background. He also uses the horizontal lines to show that it is a calm and peaceful day in the painting. Redlin also used a vertical line for the pole of the American flag to show height and strength. He unintentionally does this to show that the flagpole is tall, but he also does it to show that the United States is a strong country.
I like the sculpture of the bronze bull that was completed by Arturo Di Modica. I like that it was placed near the New York Stock Exchange to represent a bull market, which is when the stock market increases in price. It is cool that he started creating it when the stock market went down, to give everyone hope that the stock market would do better. I like that he ended up using a bunch of curved lines to create the bull to portray ease. It was unintentional, but he used these curved lines, so we will know that people are generally at ease with their income when the stock market is doing well.
I also enjoy the sculpture “Fearless Girl,” which was completed by Kristen Visbal. It is rude that she changed the meaning of Modica’s bronze bull when she placed her sculpture in front of the bull, but she was able to do a good job. She did a good job at making the sculpture look realistic by using form for some of the more detailed things, such as her hair and shoelaces.
Similarly to you, I am not a fan of the art done by Roger Ing. I will admit, though, that he did a good job at using lines to express emotion. He used some jagged lines throughout the painting, so we would know that the person in the painting is feeling turmoil as he is screaming.
Despite not being a fan of the “Lady from the Book,” I will say that Roger Ing did a good job with the different colors that he used in his painting. I like that he used black for the right of the lady’s nose, so we would know that there is a shadow on her nose. This also helps to make the painting look realistic, as we can know that the lady is being lit up by some light off to the left of the painting.
